Why you should consider to invest in rare, discontinued Gin

Because: every well sorted bar needs to offer it, every ambitious hobby barkeeper owns a (small) bottle and at frequent intervals magazines, newspapers and of course and in any event blogs write about it:

Tanqueray Malacca Gin

Produced just for 4 years and just for the US market it was discontinued 2004 because of missing success (the official story says).
According to the bottle, Malacca is an "1839 recipe originally developed during the days of the Company's Far Eastern trade...[and] is infused with selected botanicals from the East Indies and Europe."

It looks like that still 5 years later people are keen to find out what does this mean and looking desperately for a bottle, and there are others how sell them from time to time on eBay. They sell big bottles, medium sized bottles (200-375ml) and also the miniatures with 50ml. And even sometimes several original boxed packages with a dozen of them: 3x12x50ml Malacca.jpg

Completely indifferent how the Malacca Gin smalls and taste it might be worth to think about to invest some money crisis-proof in it, just because it’s rare and will become more and more rare (people are not able to restrain oneself and drink it…).

So here comes the Ginologist service: the actual (and average) price for 1 litre (33.81 US ounces) of Tanqueray Malacca Gin in US$ based on eBay auctions. (And if you are aware of any other serious deals, please let us know!)

Enjoy this chart, it will be updated as long as auctions will end successful. Yes I know, it’s not really precise because of the rumours that people buy there own stuff just to keep the prices high…
Besides this, also keep in mind that 5 years ago the original price for a 0.7 litre bottle of Malacca Gin was around $20…

And if you nevertheless not consider to invest money in Gin, next time ask your barkeeper for a "Malacca Gin"-drink and simple enjoy it.

Gin for Gin-Haters, but without any Juniper at all?

Its about Vodka, just to state it in the beginning and make the point.

Square One released a new vodka with 8 organic botanicals in it and starting now to make some hype around it, but using Gin and not Vodka for their marketing...

CEO Allison Evanow explains the usage of Gin in the following way: "While we are definitely not trying to be a juniper-less gin, I do think, for example, that our taste profile will bring non-gin drinkers into the botanical fold." She also feels that this mélange will continue to satisfy botanical spirit cocktail geeks with a new flavor profile not found in gins, aquavits and genevers.

Does nobody listen if they talk about new Vodka, so they must use Gin to sell it?
Wow...

So what is Gin and is there a "juniper-less gin"?
There is a short and simple answer: In all types of gin, the predominant flavour of must be juniper.

So, please stop to confuse people with your "Gin-Talking" and call it what it is: Vodka with fancy botanicals!
